LONDON - Late Saturday night, President Biden and First Lady Dr. Jill Biden arrived in London ahead of Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral.
On Sunday, the Bidens visited the Queen lying-in-state at Westminster Hall. The President made the sign of the cross and put his hand to his heart as he stood beside the Queen’s coffin.
Following their visit at Westminster, the Bidens signed the Queen’s condolence book at Lancaster House.
“Queen Elizabeth lived her life for the people she served with wisdom and grace,” the First Lady wrote. “We will never forget her warmth, kindness, and the conversations we shared. May God grant her eternal rest.”
Biden called the Queen “decent,” “honorable” and “all about service” as he signed the book.
“To all the people of England, all the people in the United Kingdom, our hearts go out to you," he said. “You were fortunate to have had her for 70 years, we all were. The world's better for her.”
President Biden then attended a reception at Buckingham Palace hosted by the Queen’s successor, King Charles III. Tomorrow, Biden will be among the presidents, prime ministers, kings, queens and sultans representing nearly 200 countries and territories at the funeral.
