And the 2020 Oscar Nominees are....
Another Year of Unchanging Trends for the Academy
Article by Maddie Tyler, AKSM News
LOS ANGELES - This morning, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences released the nominations for the 92nd Academy Awards. Topping the list was the dark drama, Joker, which brought in 11 nominations from the AMPAS. Other contenders for best picture include Ford v Ferrari, Netflix’s The Irishman, Jojo Rabbit, Little Women, Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood, Marriage Story, Parasite and 1917. Little Woman actress, Saoirse Ronan - who has a close connection to AKSM Film Studios - is nominated for Best Leading Actress.
One film that did not make the cut was the Villanova University student-produced Sankofa documentary in the Documentary (Short) category. The film - produced by the student’s Riptide production company - had previously won Gold during the 46th Annual Student Academy Awards in October 2019. The film has won five film festivals out of their countless number appearances and awards.
Riptide Picture’s Multimedia Producer and Designer, Isabela Mansour, stated that, “We're really proud of how far Sankofa has come, and we’re continuing to share our story worldwide. It's exciting to see fellow Student Oscar winner, Daria Kashcheeva, nominated in the Animation Short Film category, and we hope to see more students shining in years to come.”
As for ongoing trends with the Academy’s diversity, there were no women nominated in the Best Director category. While announcing the nominations, the disparity of female nominations led actress Issa Rae to state, “Congratulations to those men.” In another trend from last year, there will be no host.
The 92nd Academy Awards will air on February 9th, 2020 on ABC at 6:30 PM EST.
