MOSCOW - From September 12th to September 17th, North Korean leader, Kim Jong Un, stayed in Russia to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin and attend the 2023 North Korea–Russia summit. This is Kim’s most extended foreign travel as a leader where the two countries expanded on enhancing their defense ties and military cooperation.
During Mr. Kim’s six-day visit, he believes that he deepened “comradely fellowship and friendly ties” with Putin, state media reported. Foreign experts assume that the two countries are determined to lock in arms transfer deals in violation of U.N. Security Council resolutions, mainly since they both have stark conflicts with Western nations.
In addition, Putin welcomed him to the Vostochny space center in Russia’s Far East, where he used a luxuriously safe and exclusive bulletproof train to travel from location to location. They traveled there before heading to military sites. In recent Russian media footage, the two notorious leaders were smiling as they greeted each other and shook hands before Mr. Putin personally guided him around the entirety of the space center.
The space launch center in Russia houses some of the most dangerous and advanced weapon systems such as fighter jets, hypersonic missiles and nuclear-capable bombers. This is raising concern considering the fact that Kim offers “full and unconditional support” to Putin, as said in live comments during their meeting last week.
Putin and Kim seem to be teaming up in their discussions about armed forces with Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu where they mentioned the importance of ‘strategic and tactical coordination’. This relationship between Putin and Kim could be an extreme threat to the United States.
"Russia has risen to a sacred fight to protect its sovereignty and security against the hegemonic forces" of the West, Mr. Kim said, telling Mr. Putin he would "always support" his decisions, via BBC News.
South Korean and United States officials advised Russia and North Korea that they would face tough consequences if they continue to have such dangerous weapon transfer deals because it could potentially violate U.N. Security Council resolutions as echoed by US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller, last Wednesday.
The US has also warned that it would "not hesitate to take action" if North Korea provides weapons to Russia. The Kremlin (Dmitry Peskov) had said that the interests of Russia and North Korea were important to them "and not warnings from Washington”.
According to outside experts, Kim has been pushing to acquire food and economic aid due to Russia’s hesitance to share their weaponry with other nations and countries across the world.
It appears that Kim would give ammunition to refill Russia’s poor inventory in the second year of the war against Ukraine in return for receiving Russian technologies to modernize his nuclear weapon arsenals. Ultimately upon returning to their home countries, state media reported that Kim and Putin have strengthened foreign affairs.
