REHOBOTH BEACH, Del. - President Biden has announced he is exiting the campaign trail and passing the torch to former California Senator and democratic powerhouse Kamala Harris.
Vice President Harris will be only the second woman to ever be at the top of the democratic ticket, next to former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in 2016. Clinton was also against President Trump in his first bid for the White House.
President Biden announced his departure via a social media letter on July 21st . His letter comes following weeks of scrutiny from top democrats, in public and private, over Biden's campaign. Many democrats had also acknowledged how his candidacy continued to damage democratic control over the House or Senate come this November.
Biden's dismissal comes amid a series of unlucky events that have tarnished his campaign's chances of remaining in office. Starting off in late June at his concerning debate performance, from there the rallied American unity after Trump’s attempted assassination.
As the Democratic National Convention will be held from August 19th through the 22nd, Harris will most likely have enough delegates to become the official nominee which will continue her long road ahead. Harris was the first woman to be elected as the Vice President, as well as first Black and South Asian American.
Vice President Harris was born and raised in the city of Oakland in Northern California as the daughter of two immigrants and civil rights activists. She became a graduate of Howard University as well as the University of California Hastings College of Law.
Harris married First Gentlemen Doug Emhoff, a lawyer, in 2014 and has blended their family with their children Ella and Cole ever since.
Coming from one of the most liberal states in the nation, Harris has a strict agenda on social issues that concern women, members of the LGBTQ+ community, those of color and more.
A key success by the Vice President was her capping of insulin prices to $35 a month for senior citizens as well as lowering the price of prescription drugs and extending postpartum care through the American program of Medicaid.
Harris is expected to pick a running mate before the DNC, with top contenders being Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly, Kansas Gov. Andy Beshear and more.
