Statement by Andrew McKeough on the Passing of
Prince Phillip of England, Duke of Edinburgh
This morning the world was awakened to the news of history as Buckingham Palace announced the death of Prince Phillip, Duke of Edinburgh. Over the past ninety-nine years, the world has witnessed Prince Phillip as the Consort of the Queen. Always walking just a few steps behind Her Majesty. However, his presence was always felt as soon as he walked into the room. A figure who was larger than life itself, Prince Phillip often broke tradition from the protocol of the royal family. He was the member of the royal family that was known for his advice and blunt opinions that were often the most sought upon in the rigor that is the royal household.
An airman and sailor, Prince Phillip situated himself as a historical figure within English history by making sure he was ever present during every moment. He truly lived up to the literal meaning of “Consort of the Queen;” as the one who Queen Elizabeth would look to for advice in the most difficult situations during her reign and throughout their 74-year marriage. He was a loyal companion, husband, and leader.
On this first day of mourning, my thoughts are with the country of England as they celebrate the life and legacy of a leader and uncommon man.
